At the end of April 2026, I was in Cancun for a work retreat. When it finished, a colleague and I flew to Mexico City for four nights at the start of May, the week of Cinco de Mayo.
We stayed at the Sheraton, right next to the Angel of Independence. That turned out to be the best possible spot.
Three hours of lucha libre
We went to a live wrestling night. Think WWE, but louder and closer. We were there for three hours and it never got boring.
Tacos, everywhere
We ate at so many taco shops that I lost count. The street tacos were amazing. If you only do one thing in Mexico City, eat.
Museums and a huge library
We walked the popular streets and went to a lot of museums. We also visited the biggest library in the city.
The Sunday surprise
This is the part I didn’t expect. On Sunday, the city shuts the main road outside our hotel to traffic. The whole thing fills up with cyclists, skaters and people just walking.
We cycled it ourselves. A huge city, suddenly quiet and walkable, with the Angel right there.
One of the biggest cities in the world, and on Sunday morning it belongs to the bikes.
If you go
Stay near the Angel, and make sure your trip covers a Sunday. Then eat as many tacos as you can.
